Another prestige project of Hiram involved the supply of high quality larch timber to a Dutch boat owner for the restoration of a ship mast. The “Zout” is a Dutch “Schokker” replica of the original Schokker ships, originally built for fishing in the Dutch Zuiderzee and the Rhine in the early 20th century. The “Schokkertree”, a special contraption for catching eels with larger nets, distinguished this ship from others.
In 2006 the designer of the Zout, Oliver Vermeer, replicated the ship from the original designs, but added a few special perks, such as a more streamlined hull to make it faster than Zouts predecessors.
Today, the Zout serves as excursion ship for a total of 8 people. Anchoring near the wadden islands Terschelling, she travels through the Ijselsea to the Dutch and German wadden islands close by.
Our timber experts personally chose several possible trees in German forests ( only one was used, the others are spare masts). After, the trees were shipped to a subcontractor, who remodeled the trees into masts corresponding with size and shape of the old shipmast. Our team knows about the special characteristics the trees are supposed to have as masts. Apart from high quality larch, we also offer douglas fir, Oak or other domestic wood species that are perfectly suitable for our clients boats and ships.
